SANTHIA

Read, write and understand Gurbani (the Gurus teachings) utilising the same system implemented & taught by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji, the 10th Sikh Guru. Absorb the divine and expansive knowledge of the Sikh divine scripture, Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji to build your relationship with Akaal Purakh (God).

WHAT IS SANTHIA?

Santhia is the term that refers to the learning of the script of Gurmukhi in relation to Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji, the Sikh divine scripture. It differs from a Punjabi class in that a Santhia class solely concentrates on the teachings of the Guru as opposed to learning for communication purposes or general knowledge, hence the term ‘Gurmukhi’ – facing towards the Guru. For students who are interested in learning the Punjabi language, there are going to be separate courses available for this on p6academy.co.uk soon.

GURBANI VIDYA

The Gurmukhi script has existed in some way, shape or form for centuries, even before the coming of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji. Phonetically, for communication purposes, the Punjabi language itself has also quite possibly existed for thousands of years. However, it was the 2nd Sikh Guru, Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji, that formalised the script into ‘Gurmukhi’ within which the 35 letters of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji would be formatted. Sri Guru Angad Dev Ji actively taught the 35 letters & early forms of Gurbani (Guru’s teachings) at Gurdwara Sri Khadur Sahib, located in Sri Amritsar Sahib, Punjab.

GURBANI LEARNING CENTRES

A total of 6 Gurus had their teachings scribed into Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. These Gurus actively taught the Gurmukhi script & often, had their Sikhs teaching in foreign lands.
Finally, Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji revolutionised & finalised the way for Sikhs to learn Gurbani. They created institutions called Taksaals (learning centres) within which a system existed for the newly formed Khalsa to learn from. This Taksaal that was created had Baba Deep Singh Ji & Bhai Mani Singh Ji (highly respected Sikhs) as the teachers with Gurmukhi & Gurbani being the focus. It was effectively a safe space for those who had the desire to learn about the Guru from those who had the appropriate credentials to teach. The creation of these Taksaals by Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji has enabled the preservation of the authentic teachings of Sikhi. The systems created by the Guru within these Taksaals have been preserved over centuries & even to this day, these same systems are utilised. P6 Academy strives to remain as close to these authentic teaching methods as possible.

Starting with the 35 letters that make up the Gurmukhi script, the Santhia classes have been tailored for students who have no knowledge at all although those that have previous experience still have a lot to gain. After learning the letters, sounds & building of words and sentences in Module 1, students will move on to Sri Jap Ji Sahib and the daily Sikh prayers in Module 2 working up to being able to read Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji from Ang 1-1430 in Module 3. Students will be taught how to read, write and understand Gurbani in a structured manner. As Sikhs, we have a unique situation – the teachings contained within our divine scripture were scribed and recited by the Gurus themselves. This means that if we want the authentic teachings of the Guru that sat on the burning hot plate and didn’t even flinch, the source is there. If you truly want to understand what the Guru wants YOU to know, this course is perfect for you.
