SANTHIA OPPORTUNITIES

WHY TEACH SANTHIA WITH P6 ACADEMY

  • Rewarding service:
  • A unique opportunity:
  • Life-long learning:

To teach someone how to read Gurbani is one of the most fulfilling and rewarding deeds. When a student begins to read, understand and apply the teachings of the Guru, it is the most beautiful thing to be a part of. If you have been taught by any genuine Santhia Ustaad, you will know the fruits of this labour. Give back the thanks you owe to your own teachers, by becoming role models yourself, working in the true service of the ultimate SatGuru.

Having the opportunity to sit in the comfort of your own home & teach students worldwide is a truly unique situation. You will be able to connect through the online platform with students all over the world utilising a curriculum for teaching. This curriculum follows the authentic teachings of Sri Guru Gobind Singh Ji as passed down through Taksaal. Beginning from 35 Akhar, students will eventually learn up to Ang 1430 of Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji and beyond!

Nobody ever becomes completely learned in Sikhi however having the ability to interact with students can solidify & further your own knowledge in Sikhi. P6 Academy wants to create a micro-economy for Santhia teachers where they can earn a living from this glorious work. For individuals who have spent years learning and have a desire to pass this on, we want to provide an opportunity for them to earn a living wage. Therefore, this is a paid opportunity, however the academy can also accommodate more flexible opportunities for Sevadaars.

How to get started

If you have undertaken Santhia previously and have learnt the intricacies of how to read Gurmukhi and Gurbani, then this may be an opportunity for you. Please consider that the VLE strictly follows the curriculum of Taksaal and you must adhere to this curriculum i.e., 35 Akhar, Muharni, Words, Panj Granthi, 22 Vaaran, Bhagat Bani, Bhai Gurdaas Ji Vaaran & Aad Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji.

You will teach online on the Virtual Learning Environment. Our central administrators will assign students to you based on your availabilities and this will build your timetable with allocated time slots for lessons. Using a username and password, which will be provided to you, you will be able to login to the portal at lesson times and connect to the student. Using the mic and camera on your device, you will be able to deliver the lesson via Zoom.

You can begin by filling out the application form found on this page. Once we have received your form, we will contact you to arrange an online interview. If that’s successful, we will run background checks such as DBS. Once all of this is done and passed, you will be allocated students and can begin your journey!

Lessons are only 15 minutes one to one. Depending on the student you are teaching, you will have an awareness of what stage they are on based on data results and your own assessment of the student’s capabilities. There is a learning scheme which guides on the elements that need to be taught for the individual lesson the student attends.

For students, the curriculum is split into Modules, which are further split into Units and Lessons. For example, Module 1 is Foundation: an introduction to Gurmukhi. Within this, there are 3 Units: 35 Akhar, Muharni and Words, Sentences and Paragraphs. Within each Unit, there are a set number of lessons e.g., Unit 1 has 7 lessons where each lesson is 5 letters. Once the teacher has confirmed the student has completed lesson 1, access to lesson 2 will be granted for that specific student. Students will only have access to the resources of the lesson they are partaking in (as well as any previous lessons they have completed) while the rest of the curriculum will be locked until they reach that level.  There are also mid-unit and end of unit assessments which must be passed by students to allow progression within the course.

You will need either a smartphone, tablet, laptop or PC with a WIFI connection, webcam and mic. It is important for you to have any other resources you may want to use such as a Pothi sahib, however, most tools for learning will be provided by the academy I.e., online PDF’s that can be shared on-screen via Zoom.

During lessons, it's your responsibility to identify weaknesses and support the student. Outside of lessons, students will have access to supplementary resources such as videos, documents or PDFS. Assessments will also be used to aid you in understanding the level of each individual student. It’s the responsibility of the teacher to highlight students that are not engaging, welfare issues or anything else that needs to be mentioned.

We offer paid and voluntary positions for teachers. This means if you are looking to dedicate your time to Santhia and use this as a primary source of income, we will aim to pay a living wage. Otherwise, you can embark on this completely Nishkam and entirely for the passion to teach and preserve Gurmukhi. You can also opt to be reimbursed for any costs incurred I.e., equipment.

Each live lesson for a student is around 20 minutes. Outside of this, there will be elements of overwatching a student’s progress by monitoring their succession in mini multiple-choice questions and assessments. Therefore, for each student, it is likely you will dedicate 30-40 minutes per week, and when you apply, you can indicate how many hours you are willing to dedicate each week.

All types of training, course specific and beyond will be facilitated by the academy to aid teaching via the VLE.
